How To NOT Get Sick This Winter

Foods that support a healthy immune system

Tis the season for flu, colds, viruses and sinus issues.  How to fight back?  Boost your immune system with the right foods. In addition to getting good sleep, regular exercise and washing your hands regularly, eating specific foods can indeed help your immune system stay strong so that you can avoid getting sick this season.  Check out this list of foods that support a healthy immune system.

  • Berries – blueberries, strawberries, raspberries.  Valuable for their vitamin C content plus antioxidants.
  • Eggs – to add zinc to your diet (which is mainly found in the yolk, so don’t exclude that part of the egg).
  • Broccoli – more vitamin C here.  Lots of enjoyable ways to eat this veggie if you’re not a fan; try roasting it.
  • Pumpkin seeds – rich in vitamin E, which is an antioxidant, plus zinc.  Try them roasted as a snack or as a salad topper.
  • Oranges – yep, vitamin C powerhouse. Also consider other citrus fruits like grapefruit, lemons and tangerines.
  • Fatty fish – think salmon and mackerel.  Omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin D and zinc are all found in good supply in fatty fish.
  • Beans and other legumes – examples include garbanzo beans, black beans, lentils.  You’ll find an ample supply of zinc in these foods.
  • Greek yogurt – you’ll get in probiotics, which will keep your gut healthy and enhance a well-functioning immune system.
  • Leafy greens – think of greens like spinach and kale. Loaded with vitamins A and C, which boost immune function.
  • Sweet potatoes – they have a healthy amount of beta carotene, which is converted into vitamin A.  Also a good source of vitamin C.
